The Digital Age of Trash Media Part 1 Thoughts

The Digital Age of Trash Media Part 1 Thoughts

As social media brings people from all parts of the world together to collaborate in the shared cyber space, we are often met with not unity but division. From division of different ethnic backgrounds to people shouting their uniqueness at the top of their lungs.

Often I find myself having to do a double take, because that so-called unique squat toilet that you swore was unique to your country, is yet somehow also unique to Turkey, Russia, China, Iran, Indonesia, etc.

As a human species, I guess we aren’t all that special when we see the various forms of dumplings presented around the world: Ravioli-Pelmeni-Gyoza-and the list goes on and on.

Let’s look at the history of braids, for this is a common argument on facebook forums of who can wear them and who can’t. Google the statue, Venus of Willendorf: A 11.1 centimeter tall figurine found in Austria. Notice anything about her hair? It’s braided. Braids originate from all parts of the world, and they are very stylish. The problem with braids is that in certain communities, mainly the black communities in the United States have been shamed for their cultural hairstyles and some workplaces don’t allow it. It becomes a bigger problem when Kendall Jenner (some model) rocks it on the runway for fashion, but not awareness. How do you feel about that?

In the cyber world, which is meant to bring people together, are more and more people separating themselves? What is within us that needs to shout our desire to be separate, instead of unified? If you are like Patrick, living under a rock, you are probably away from all the noise of certain “news media” and Facebook groups shouting their hate speech, sometimes disguised as journalism.

Yes we are all special in our own way- but we aren’t that special. Perhaps we are like Rice-a widespread carb used in nearly all parts of the world just flavored differently. Whether we are Risotto from Italy, Tahdig from Iran, Basmati from India, Karelian Pasty from Finland, Jollof from Ghana, Fried rice from China, Belgian Rice Pie from Belgium, Nasi Goreng from Malaysia, Jambalaya from New Orleans, etc.-We are all still rice and rice taste delicious.

However if you are racist-no rice for you.

People need to understand that it’s not about one culture is better than another, it’s about appreciation. We are more alike than unalike. Also most things are not black or white, they are in the shades of grey.

Cyber space makes it so hard to determine “the world” as a while considering all the bias’s and opinions surrounding it. Rarely do you see anything that has facts, but more often they are someone’s matter of opinion or half truths and others take those as whole truths. The world through media is seen more like a melting pot when it should be seen like a beautiful and unique salad. Every place unique to itself. You don’t experience anything like that until you put down your phone and open your eyes to the beauty of the world. Great article Teisha!
